Kelly Smith '86

I was raised in Colorado but desired to attend college out of state and I’m so glad that I did! I don’t recall exactly why I chose the UofA but I vividly remember falling in love with Tucson and the Sonora when attending freshman orientation. Just like ΣΧ it has been a lifetime love.

I was initiated in the fall semester of 1980 and was blessed to be surrounded by some of the finest brothers one could ask for. Brothers who are still central to my life, long after the echo of so many friends have faded away. My academic career at the U was “not worthy” and I returned to Colorado to care for my mother in the final stages of her battle with cancer.

Eventually graduating from Metropolitan State University of Denver, I worked in a variety of sales and customer service fields, got married, had two amazing children (a son and a daughter who are my everything) and got divorced. I was given the blessing to raise my daughter, Teagan, on my own through her high school years and to have my adult son, Chandler, living with me during the pandemic.

Fall 2021 saw Chan head off to grad school for his PhD and me making the move to Tucson, the place that still pulled on my heartstrings. Teagan is moving to Tucson in June 2023 and I couldn’t be more ecstatic. I have yet to mention my other love, Jackie. Many of you have met her and a there is no better Akita/Rottweiler mix anywhere. You will find us on a 3-4 mile walk every night throughout downtown, 4th Avenue and on the campus.

I’m living my best life and am, of course, “’m living my best life and am, of course, “Always proud to be…”
