Grant Edward Smith '69 Enters Chapter Eternal

Brother Grant Smith, Beta Phi ’69, who was director of the Student Physical Fitness Center at the UA, entered Chapter Eternal on Dec. 24, 2016, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born in Tucson, graduated from Salpointe Catholic High School and earned a UA degree in physical education while joining the Beta Phi Chapter of Sigma Chi,

Brother Smith was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps and released from active duty as a captain. He then earned a master's degree in education from Northern Arizona University, While in Flagstaff, he served as chapter advisor of Zeta Omicron. The NAU Sigs petitioned the International Fraternity to have Brother Smith initiated as an alumnus when Beta Phi Chapter re-chartered in 1977.

He returned to the UA where he earned an additional master and a doctorate in education, during all of which he taught and developed student and community physical activity programs and competitions.

As director of the UA fitness center, Smith directed the establishment of the center, as well as student fitness and sports programs, in addition to community involvement. Smith then moved to Flagstaff to participate in his favorite sport, skiing.
